CPSC Require the Conformity with UL2272 for Self Balance Scooter
Publisher:Admin  Source:  Date:2016/3/17

CPSC issued a letter to manufacturers, importers and retailers of self-balancing scooters to urge them to make certain that the self-balancing scooters that import, manufacture, distribute, or sell in the United States should comply with currently applicable voluntary safety standards on Feb 18, 2016, including all referenced standards and requirements contained in UL 2272- Outline of investigationfor electrical systems for self-balancing scooters and all lithium ion battery products must comply with test requirement under UN/DOT 38.3: Transport of Dangerous Goods for LithiumMetal and Lithium Ion Batteries. If CPSC staffs encounter such products at import that do not meet the safety standards referenced above, they may seek detention and/or seizure. If they encounter such products domestically, they may seek a recall of these products.

In the meanwhile, UL announced on Feb 2, 2016 that the company is now accepting product submittals of self-balancing scooters for construction evaluation, testing, and/or UL certification. However, UL officially indicated that there is no any self-balancing scooter pass the most updated UL 2272 certification till now. That means all self-balancing scooters sold or selling in US market are non-conformity with UL 2272, or we can say these products are unsafe, most of them are china-made.

BACL suggestion

All manufacturers of self-balancing scooters should improve productive technology and product quality so that the products comply with safety requirements of UL 2272 and UN/DOT 38.3.
