Textile labeling requirement comes from textile labeling and advertising regulations (C.R.C., c.1551). The last amendments came into force on March 25, 2010. Any amendments that were not in force as of December 10, 2015 are set out at the end of this document under the heading "Amendments Not in Force".
Regulation scope
Consumer textile articles worn by or carried on a person, including: wigs, toupees and other pieces for the head. And floor coverings, outer covering of upholstered furniture, slip cover, towels, umbrellas and parasols etc. The remainder please see schedule I.
Exemption
A consumer textile article is exempt from the act, which includes only one-time use products, overshoes, boots, shoes, indoor slippers, footwear liners and insoles, handbags, toys, belts ect. The rest of the exempt products will be shown in schedule II.
Textile Labeling Requirement:
1. The label should show fiber content, the name and postal address of the dealer and country of origin (if that the article or any fabric or fiber therein is imported).
2. The fiber content should be shown in the label in both the English and French languages.
3. A dealer to whom an identification number has been assigned or transferred is entitled to use the identification number on the label of a consumer textile article in place of the dealer’s number and postal address.
4. Where two representation labels are applied to any consumer textile article included in schedule III. Fiber content may be shown in English on one label and in French on the other label. The name and postal address of the dealer and country of origin may be shown on either of the two labels.
Where two representation labels are applied to any article included in schedule I and not included in schedule III, part of the information may be shown on one label and the remainder on the other if the two labels are contiguous.
5. Where a consumer textile article is sold to the consumer in a wrapper, package or container, the information that is fiber content, name and address of the dealer and country of origin shall be shown on such wrapper, package or container.
6. All the information on labels or other area should be clearly and prominently shown, easily legible, in type of equal size and prominence.
