Botswana's Equipment Approval: Regulatory Streamlining Ahead!
Publisher:Admin  Source:  Date:2023/10/13

We bring you an important update from Botswana that might reshape the way certain electronic devices are approved in the country. The Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) has recently announced key exemptions from the homologation process for specific categories of equipment.

This move, following the revision of the TYPE APPROVAL GUIDELINES 2023, aims to simplify regulatory procedures and potentially reduce time-to-market for manufacturers and importers.

Here’s a breakdown of the exemptions:

Personal Computers, Laptops, Tablets, IoT Devices: Devices in this category are exempt from approval if they come with embedded Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transceivers, provided that the Wi-Fi transceiver is Wi-Fi5 CERTIFIED™.

Receive-Only Equipment: This includes FM/MW/SW radios, televisions, satellite decoders, and set-top boxes.

Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Embedded in Vehicles (RTTE): Bluetooth systems, navigation systems, remote sensors, car keys, and similar devices are exempted, provided they operate within the appropriate frequency bands.

GMPCS Mobile Satellite Terminals with ITU Mark: Equipment falling under this category will also be exempted from the homologation process.

These exemptions mark a significant step towards simplifying the homologation requirements for specific equipment categories. The goal is to reduce regulatory complexity, making it easier for manufacturers and importers to bring their products to market swiftly.

What’s Next?

To understand the full impact of these exemptions, a questionnaire has been submitted to BOCRA. Further details will be shared as soon as we receive responses from the agency.

These changes are expected to have a substantial effect on Botswana's regulatory landscape, potentially opening up new avenues for innovation and market entry.

We are committed to keeping you informed as this situation develops. Stay tuned for more updates on how these regulatory changes might affect the technology market in Botswana and beyond.
