On 25 Feb. 2020, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a direct final rule within the Federal Register for mandatory standard 16 CFR Part 1224- Safety Standard for portable bed rails. The rule revised the mandatory safety standard to incorporate by reference the most recent version of the applicable standard ASTM F2085-19. The rule will be effective on May 20, 2020, unless significant adverse comment would be received by March 26, 2020.
The standard defines portable bed rail as a portable railing installed on the side of an adult bed and/or on the mattress surface which is intended to keep a child from falling out of bed. Compared to the previous version ASTM F2085-12, the 2019 version includes some minor editorial changes and one substantive change regarding the test platform 2 which was chosen to assess the influence of mattress thickness on bedrail performance, as below:
