CEN has published toy safety standard EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018

In June 2017, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018, the toy safety standard regarding mechanical and physical properties. The new standard supersedes EN 71-1:2014 and includes Amendments 1, 2 &3 approved by CEN on 22 January 2018.

 

The following significant changes have been implemented in the new edition:

※The scope has been expanded to include certain flying toys and toy slings and toy catapults supplied with projectiles;

※Addition of reference to EN14682-safety of children’s clothing-cords and drawstrings on children’s clothing;

※Changes to existing definitions and inclusion of new definitions, including “arrow”, “cord”, “dart”. “fixed loop”, ”leading part”, etc.

 

Revision of the requirements of :

1. clause 4.17-projectile toys

2. clause 5.4-cods, chains and electrical cables in toys

 

Add new clauses:

1. clause 4.26-toy disguise costumes

2. clause 4.27-flying toys

※Change the requirements for certain warnings in clause 7-warnings, markings and instructions for use;

※Updates the test methods related to projectiles toys, flying toys, cords and toy scooters.

 

According to EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018, the standard shall be given the status of a national standard at the latest by November 2018, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by that date. This standard is expected to be harmonized under Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC (TSD) upon official acceptance by the European Commission (EC) and by publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).
