In October 2017, the European passed the lamps and lanterns standard of EN 60598-1:2015 that voted by the latest bulletin. It will end the interim period soon and enforce the latest lamps standard. Compared with the old standard of EN 60598-1:2008, the latest standard of EN 60598-1:2008 have done more technical revisions, including some important technical changes.

Such as:

1. Adding new requirement for the construction method of LED lamps.

2. More precise requirements for photobiological safety and the insulation between different types of circuits and so on.

    

The biggest change is to incorporate photobiological safety into mandatory standards in the first time. The new standards show that the lamps, like LED, metal halide lamp and some special tungsten halogen lamp and so on which cannot be exempt from the retina harm evaluation, should follow IEC/TR62778:2012 Application of IEC 62471 for the assessment of blue light hazard to light sources and luminaires to evaluate and cannot use blue light hazard category which is more harmful than RG2 light source.

According to the latest standard, the European has raised the safety of light biology to a high level in mandatory standards, and other countries and regions would follow it. The latest European standard will greatly increase the cost of production and testing in enterprises. When the enterprises’ product quality fails to meet the standard requirements, it would be checked and notified by the European market. So the enterprises would suffer economic lost, or even be listed in blacklist by the European.

The central secretary of CENELEC has released EN 60598-1:2015/A1: 2018 on February 23th, 2018. So the latest standards’ official released date was February 23th, 2018, fully replacement date is February 23th, 2021, which means that the inspection certificate of this version and standard will be automatically voided from February 23th, 2021.
