On 19 April 2018, the Official Journal of the European Union published Directive (EU) 2018/594 adding benzene-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid 1,2 anhydride (trimellitic anhydride) (TMA) to the REACH SVHC list because of its respiratory sensitising properties. ECHA will update the SVHC list according to the European commission's decision. By then, the SVHC candidate list will be added to 182 substances.

TMA is mainly used in the synthesis of plasticisers for PVC resins, while smaller amounts are used as a reactant in wire and cable insulation enamels and polyester resins for powder coatings.
