In March 2018, The International Standards organization (ISO) published an updated version of ISO 8124-1 “Safety of toys -- Part 1: Safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties”. The updated standard, ISO 8124-1:2018, includes updates to several areas including:

1、Modified numerous definitions, including “cords,” “elastic,” “A-weighted equivalent sound pressure level,” “pull or push toy”, etc

2、Added exemption of paperboard & fibrous filling material from reasonably foreseeable abuse testing

3、Clarified warning requirements for toys for children 36 months and over but under 72 months

4、Modified kinetic energy density per area of contact requirements for arrows

5、Modified the C-weighted requirement for close-to-the-ear toys

6、Added new sub-clauses:

    a.Yo-yo balls;

    b.Straps intended to be worn fully or partially around the neck;

    c.Sledges and toboggans with cords for pulling;

    d.Jaw entrapment in handles and steering wheels;

    e.Test for fixed loops and nooses;

    f.Electric resistance of cords;

    g.Yo-yo ball measurements (Measurement of elastic constant K & initial length l0);

    h.Jaw entrapment test;

7、Added additional sub-clauses in Annexes;

The revision ISO 8124-1:2018 specifies requirements and test methods for toys intended for use by children up to 14 years of age. Several countries including Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa and Vietnam accept ISO 8124 to show compliance to toy safety. The new version aims to align with European EN 71 and USA ASTM F963 changes.
