The Rapid Alert System for dangerous non-food products (RAPEX) enables quick exchange of information between 31 European countries and the European Commission about dangerous non-food products posing a risk to health and safety of consumers. The European Commission validated 31 RASFF jewelry notifications were all caused by chemical risks, of which nearly 80% originated from China (including Hong Kong) in 2017.

As shown in the graph 1, the total number of jewelry recalls increased from 17 in 2013 to 99 in 2015 than declined to 31 in 2017, and on the past five year-an average of 43 jewelry recalls in EU.

As shown in the graph 3, EU jewelry recalls in 2017 were all caused by chemical hazards and all because of excessive heavy metals, nickel, cadmium and lead respectively accounted for 38%, 37% and 25%.
