On April 12, 2016, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted unanimously (5-0) to deny a petition requesting amendments to the test procedure in the Standard for the Flammability of Clothing Textiles, (16C.F.R. Part 1610). The petition, FF 15-1, was submitted by the International Association of Users of Artificial and Synthetic Filament Yams and of Natural Silk. The CPSC staff recommended that the Commission deny the petition because amending the mandatory flammability standard for clothing textiles as requested by the petitioner would likely result in a reduction in the level of safety of textiles and clothing sold in the U.S. market.
16 C.F.R. Part 1610 standard test purpose:
The purpose of this standard is to reduce danger of injury and loss of life by providing, on a national basis, standard methods of testing and rating the flammability of textiles and textile products for clothing use, thereby prohibiting the use of any dangerously flammable clothing textiles.
