Interim Ban on the Supply of Unsafe Hoverboards Imposed
Publisher:Admin  Source:  Date:2016/3/24

On March 18, 2016, Minister for Small Business and the Assistant Treasurer the Hon Kelly O'Dwyer MP has imposed an interim ban on the supply of unsafe hoverboards. It comes into effect on March19, 2016.  The interim ban will last for 60 days.

Why we imposed the interim ban?

1.There are imminent fire safety risks from defective electrical circuitry and substandard lithium-ion batteries in some hoverboards.

2.There have been a number of house fires and incidents of hover boards sparking, overheating or producing smoke, both in Australia and overseas.

The ACCC urges consumers to stop using and charging your hoverboard immediately, unless you are sure it meets the safety standards specified in the ban.

BACL Suggestion:

If a supplier’s hoverboards do not meet those requirements, they are unable to sell the product during the interim ban period, so manufacturer and dealer should send their products to third party laboratory to testing to ensure its’ safety.
