April 29, 2026，The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality organization (SASO) issued a notification to conformity assessment bodies, reiterating that no conformity certificates shall be issued for products containing asbestos materials, and that companies are required to provide a declaration confirming that the product has been verified to be free of asbestos as part of the technical file documentation.

The original circular is as follows:

Referring to the Technical Regulation for Food Safety of Tools and Appliances Used in the Kitchen, approved by the SASO Board of Directors under Resolution No. (177), which was published in the Umm Al‑Qura Newspaper on 01/12/1440 A.H.

And referring to the requirement set out in the said regulation to comply with all applicable laws and regulations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including Cabinet Resolution No. (162) dated 21/09/1418 A.H., which stipulates: “Prohibition of the import of asbestos, as well as goods and materials containing this substance”;

Therefore, we hereby emphasize that all accredited conformity assessment bodies shall not issue any conformity certificates for products containing this substance, and shall require the company to provide a declaration confirming that the product is asbestos‑free, which shall be included as part of the technical file. In the event of violation of the provisions of this circular, the Authority will take legal action against the violating bodies.

Here, we kindly remind all exporters to Saudi Arabia and importers that when exporting products, they must ensure that the products do not contain asbestos and prepare the written declaration in advance.
