CEN Publishe Standard for Slide Fasteners (Zips) EN 16732: 2015
Publisher:Admin  Source:  Date:2016/3/9

One of the most significant additions to the BS 3084 standard is two new requirements for children’s zippers. An extra table has been introduced in the EN 16732 that contain these two new requirements for children’s zippers as follows:

※ An Open – End slide Fastener single stringer slider retention minimum value of 70N

※ A Zip Puller torque strength requirement of 0.34 Newton Metres. The standard also recommends that this torque test be taken to failure for Quality ControlPurposes. This torque requirement value of 0.34 N/m mirrors that of the European Toy Standard EN 71 Part 1 that has been in use for many years in Europe regarding torque strength of items attached to toys.

In addition to the table currently extant in BS 3084 regarding End – Uses and concomitant recommended performance codes for labeling purposes; four new end uses have been added with related performance codes.

END USES PERFORMANCECODE(S)

Mattresses C or D

Pillows B or C

Children’s Sleep Bags C

Children’s Clothes C

There are a number of changes in detail compared to BS 3084. As an example the Test Report section of the new EN standard does not mention pass/fail as per the old standard but instead requires the performance code to be stated based upon the test results. Also, in comparison with the older standard the new Test Report Section requires, where known, information regarding the intended end use of the zippers to be indicated.

EN 16732 is not a mandatory standard. It is mainly a “quality standard“ that European Retailers will reference within their Product Manuals. However an issue such as the Torque Strength for children’s zippers is a safety issue and in the EU such matters as this could be prosecuted by authorities in terms of the European General Product Safety Directive and its various national transpositions.

For the first time CEN has published an EN zipper standard. Previously there has never been a European-wide EN standards for these items.

The new EN standard is based substantially upon a British National Standard BS 3084: 2006. Regularly amended and updated over the years, the original version of BS 3084 is 50 years old.

The new EN Standard contains some modification and additions to BS 3084: 2006 that are briefly listed below.

The BS EN 16732 realisation of the standard was published on the 31st of December 2015. CEN requires conflicting national standards to be withdrawn by, at the latest, June2016.
