21 August 2025 ,The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Registration Department has announced the implementation of the revised IS 16242 (Part 1):2025 / IEC 62040-1:2017, replacing IS 16242 (Part 1):2014 / IEC 62040-1:2008.

Standard Update and Implementation Schedule:

Old Standard: IS 16242 (Part 1): 2014 / IEC 62040-1: 2008;

New Standard: IS 16242 (Part 1): 2025 / IEC 62040-1: 2017;

Parallel Implementation Deadline: November 19, 2025, after which the old standard will be officially withdrawn.

Major Revisions in IS 16242 (Part 1):2025

The updated standard introduces several technical enhancements, including:

Use of IEC 62477-1:2012 as a reference document.

New definition of movable UPS.

Modified requirements on enclosure flammability, input current testing, capacitor discharge, and temperature rise.

Additional test requirements covering creepage distances, force tests, handle securement, touch current, and hydrostatic pressure.

Inclusion of new clauses for short-time withstand current, unsynchronized load transfer, loss of coolant, dry heat, and damp heat tests.

For Existing Licensees

Licensees must ensure compliance with IS 16242 (Part 1):2025 by 19 November 2025, failing which licences may be cancelled or restricted.

Compliance requires submission of complete test reports from BIS-recognized laboratories for all lead models previously tested under the 2014 version.

Licensees must also submit an undertaking confirming that revised requirements are implemented across all models covered under their licence.

For New Applicants

Applications already submitted with samples or test reports may continue under the old standard until the implementation deadline.

Fresh applications may be processed under either the old or revised standard until 19 November 2025, subject to applicant declarations of compliance with the new version by the deadline.

After the deadline, licences will be granted only in accordance with the revised standard.

For Scope Changes

Requests for changes in scope will follow provisions similar to new applications.

Such requests under the old standard will only be accepted until the switchover date or the implementation deadline, whichever comes first.
