On September 26, 2022, India’s Ministry of Communications (Department of Telecommunications) issued a notification to amend the prevention of tampering of the mobile device equipment identification number.

The following amendments were added:

1. The manufacturer shall register the international mobile equipment identity number (IMEI) of every mobile phone manufactured in India with the Indian Counterfeited Device Restriction portal (https://icdr.ceir.gov.in) of the Government of India in the Department of Telecommunications prior to the first sale of the mobile phone. This rule will come into force from January 1, 2023.

2. The international mobile equipment identity number (IMEI) of the mobile phone imported in India for sale, testing, research or any other purpose shall be registered by the importer with the Indian Counterfeited Device Restriction portal (https://icdr.ceir.gov.in) of the Government of India in the Department of Telecommunications prior to import of mobile phone into the country.This rule shall come into force immediately.
