Horticultural lightingluminaires are used to promote plant growth, and increasingly welcomed by users. The market potential is huge. In order to evaluate safety requirements forhorticultural lighting luminaires, UL published the safety standard ANSI/CAN/UL8800 in 2019, which is also cited by the SCC.

On February 14, 2022, UL published aupdated standard, which mainly added Supplement SA about coatings serving an electrical and/or fire enclosure function for LED arrays. The coating needs to comply with the requirements of structure, test, marking and instructions. See below for details.

Construction and Tests

A polymeric coating material used foran electrical and/or fire enclosure function shall:

• Comply with the requirements for conformal coatings in accordance with UL 746E, and have thefollowing ratings and conditions of use:Have an assigned thermal index rating (TI);Be “indoor” or “outdoor” rated for “damp” location rated luminaires and “outdoor” rated for“wet” location and/or “IP” rated luminaire;Be applied within the coating’s rated minimum thickness;Be rated for the printed wiring board type or comply with additionaltests;

• HWI≦3；

• HAI≦3;

• Be resistant to UV radiation when the material is exposed to the sun or to UV from the lightsource；

• Comply with Dielectric Voltage Withstand Test；

• Comply withBarrier Strength Test；

• Comply withPolymeric Impact Test；

• Comply withAdhesion And Abrasion Test；

• The RTIequal to or greater than the temperature measured on the coating during the temperature test。

Marking and Instructions

• The luminaire shall be marked “Not For Residential Use” in format S16-L1, per marking heightsand formatting in UL 1598 or CSA C22.2 No 250.0.

• Instructions indicatingthat care should be taken not to damage the coating on the LED array during installation and use andcleaning of the luminaire.
