New Standard

EN IEC 60598-1:2021/A11:2022 “Luminaires - Part 1: General requirements and tests” was published on 2022-04-08. This standard specifies general requirements for luminaires, incorporating electric light sources for operation from supply voltages up to 1 000 V. The requirements and related tests of this document cover: classification, marking, mechanical construction, electrical construction and photobiological safety.

Implementation of Standards

The date of Publication (DOP) is 2023-02-16; date of Withdrawal (DOW) is 2025-02-16.

This means that all certificates issued by the old standard will be invalid on 2025-02-16. To ensure the validity of the certificate, the manufacturer should apply for version update before 2025-02-16.

Significant Technical Changes

With the release of A11:2022 amendment, EN IEC 60598-1 and IEC60598-1 will no longer be completely equivalent, and corresponding national deviations have been added.

The following SIGNIFICANT modifications are added:

Modification 1

In 3.2.12, delete NOTE 4 ” In some countries, luminaires with supply cords which are intended to be connected to the supply via a socket-outlet and which are not fitted with a plug are not permitted.”.

Modification 2

In 4.11.6, at the end of the paragraph commencing with “Following completion of these tests...”, add the following text: “the test voltage however being reduced to 1 500 V”.

Modification 3

In 5.2.2, paragraph 1, replace “IEC 60227 (all parts) and IEC 60245 (all parts)”, by “EN 50525 (all parts)”, and delete paragraph 2.

Replace Table 5.1 by the following new table:

In Clause 12.4.2 c) Line 2, after “90 °C” add “(see footnote c to Table 12.2 relating to unsleeved fixed

wiring)”.

In Table 12.2 footnote c add the following:

• after “European installation standards”: “(HD 60364 (all parts) and HD 384 (all parts))”;

• after “European cable standards”: “(EN 50525 (all parts))”.
