South Korea Amends Phthalate Requirement under Common Safety Standard for Children’s Products

On July 19, 2021, the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) published a notice no. 2021-132 to amend phthalate requirement under Common Safety Standard for Children’s Products. A new phthalate, DIBP, will be added to the phthalate requirement, expanding the number of phthalates restricted from 6 to 7. This amendment will be effective from January 1, 2022.


As defined in the Common Safety Standard, ‘children’s products’ refers to products that are used by children 13 years of age and under, excluding medicine, medical devices, cosmetics, food utensils, containers and packaging, amusement facilities/ equipment as well as consumer chemical products subject to safety verification. It does not apply to inaccessible components of a children’s product.
