Recently, South Korea notified World Trade organization (WTO) and announcing a proposal to establish a draft for Consumer Products Subject to Compliance with Safety Standards (Thermal paper) under Article 2 and Article 28 of Electrical appliances and consumer products safety control act. According to the draft regulation, concentration of bisphenol A in thermal paper shall be less than 0.02% by weight, the proposed date of adoption is May 2021, or later, and the proposed date of entry into force is May 2022, or later.
Thermal paper consists of a paper base with at least one coating that changes color when exposed to heat. The coatings on thermal paper may contain BPA. Thermal paper is usually used to make business or bank records, including but not limited to records of receipt, credits, withdrawals, deposits, or credit or debit card transactions.
