On October 9, 2020 The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) published the RTTE Type Approval Rules in the Extra ordinary Gazette No. 2196/51 of 09/10/2020 that came into effect on December 16, 2020.

The summary of the main changes are:

(1) Introduction of standards and simplified certification methods;

(2) One sample is required for type approval application, and TRC has the right to request up to 2 samples and to keep the samples for 2 years;

(3) More specific documents request;

(4) All devices certified by TRCSL are required to comply with mandatory labeling requirements and labels must be purchased from TRCSL, effective from June 16, 2021;

(5) Processing time is 30 working days but actual lead time will be varied (upon received sample and all documents);

(6) Fast track scheme is available with additional payment;

(7) TRCSL only accepts test reports from accredited testing laboratories (ILAC accredited laboratories in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025). The date of the test report shall not be earlier than 3 months from the date of application;

(8) Existing certificate will be valid for 6 months and after that all need to apply for new certificate;

(9) Finalvalidity of certificate is 4 years;

(10) The certificate holder must be local company that also holds the telecommunication license. Previous certificate under foreign manufacturer will not be valid anymore after 6 monthsand it will be required to apply for new application under local company;

(11) The simplified application is only available for those who have done new application after December 16, 2020. This simplified application is used for second importer.

Any applicant for type approval must comply with the new requirements.
