In June, 2020, ISO published 2 amendments for ISO 8124-1“Safety of toys —Part 1:Safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties”, ISO 8124-1:2018+A1:2020 and +A2:2020, to align the standard with the EU toy safety standard EN 71-1 and USA toy safety standard ASTM F963. The mainly changes summarized below:
ISO 8124-1:2018+A1:2020-Flying toys:
• Update terminological entries for “free flight ”and “leading edge”;
• Add new terminological and definitions for “flying toys” and ”remote-controlled flying toy”;
• Replace the existing clause “rotors and propellers” by “flying toys” and add following new requirements:
1) Leading edges on rigid parts of flying toys shall conduct the tip assessment test, remote-controlled flying toy shall be accompanied by instructions;
2) Rotors blades on flying toys shall be safety designed, flying toys with rotor blades shall be accompanied by safety warnings, replaceable rotors shall be accompanied by instructions that clearly indicate the steps necessary to remove and securely replace the rotor blades;
3) Besides conform to point 2), all rotor blades on remote-controlled flying toy shall be rounded and pass the tension test for rotor blades;
• Add new tension test method for rotor blades: including “perpendicular tension test for rotor blades” for flying toys and “tension test for rotor blades” for remote-controlled flying toys;
• Add new clause Annex B.26 regarding packaging and instruction labeling requirements of flying toys;
• Replace the existing Annex E.33 “rotors and propellers” by “flying toys”, replace the figure for safety design examples of flying toys.
ISO 8124-1:2018+A2:2020-Various:
• Add new terminological and definitions for “toy bag”;
• Update the requirements and test methods for “expending materials”;
• Add new exception to “shape, size and strength of certain toys”, to align with EN71-1;
• Revise the safety warning requirements for “cords in toys intended for children 18 months and over but under 36 months” and “projectile toys”;
• Revise requirements for “other toys with folding mechanisms”;
• Add new clause “4.36-asemmbly” with detail requirements;
• Other editorial changes.
