ASTM Releases Consumer Safety Specification for Infant and Cradle Swings ASTM F2088-20
Publisher:Admin  Source:  Date:2020/9/2

In June 2020, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) released the latest ASTM F2088-20 "Standard Consumer Safety Specifications for Infants and Cradle Swings". This consumer safety specification establishes safety performance requirements, test methods, and labeling requirements to minimize the hazards of the swing identified in the introduction to babies.

ASTM F2088-20 is designed to minimize the risk of infant injury caused by normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse or abuse of swings. It is not designed to solve all incidents and injuries caused by other people interacting with babies on the swing.

The product also covers products with electric mechanisms, which are used to provide swinging or sliding seats in any direction relative to the frame (ie, front and rear, left and right, and arc) for children who cannot climb out of the product. The power mechanism can be a battery, an AC adapter, a winding mechanism or other means. This specification does not include products designed to provide sleeping space for passengers.

The following are the main changes between ASTM F2088-20 and the old version of ASTM F2088-19:

• Newly added scope of application 1.3 This Consumer Safety Code is applicable to provide power to swing or slide the seat along the opposite direction of the frame (from front to back, from side to side) to infants with (incapable of leaving the seat) Institutional products. The power source of the mechanism can be a battery, an AC power adapter, a winding mechanism or other methods. This specification does not cover products that provide sleeping space for babies.

• New general requirement 5.8. All protective parts that can come into contact with babies and children inside or around the product should be evaluated.

• New general requirements 5.11 The use, mode, and position of the cradle swing or multi-function swing in the rest (non-swing) position should meet the requirements of the consumer safety specification ASTM F2194.

• New performance requirements 6.5 cradle swings and multi-function swings should not be equipped with restraint devices in the recommended use positions of all manufacturers.
