Argentina is planning to develop a regulation that will restrict hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, like the EU's Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS), delegates at a Chemical Watch virtual event on regulatory updates in Latin America heard on 24 June.
The environment ministry's chemicals national directorate expects to begin drafting the regulation soon, according to its technical adviser Agustin Harte, although it is still discussing exactly how it is going to "tackle the issue".
Speaking at the virtual event, Mr Harte said discussions began after the country's implementation earlier this year of a resolution to ban substances newly listed under the UN's Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants (POPs). "From there, we started discussing limit values for certain chemicals in certain products, and that's where the RoHS discussion started," he said.
The draft's publication and a consultation with stakeholders could take place next year, according to Mr Harte.
