Australia Issued New Safety Standards for Certain Toy

In June, 2020, Australia published 2 new mandatory toy safety standards:


“Consumer Goods (Projectile Toys) Safety Standard 2020” :

Transition period:

1. Up to 11 June 2021, suppliers have the option to comply with the requirements from either the two standards:

• Consumer Goods (Projectile Toys) Safety Standard 2020;

• Consumer Protection Notice No. 16 of 2010 (Consumer Product Safety Standard for children’s Projectile Toys).


2. From 12 June 2021, suppliers must only comply with the requirements in the Consumer Goods (Projectile Toys) Safety Standard 2020.


Key requirements of the new standard:

1. Projectile Toys have to comply with one of the following requirements:

• Australian/New Zealand Toy Safety Standard :AS/NZS 8124-1:2019 Clause 4.18 (with the omitting of 4.18.3.b & the first paragraph of 4.18.4)and clause 4.19;

• European toy safety standard: EN 71-1:2014 + A1:2018 clause 4.11.(e)(mouth-actuated projectile toys) and clause 4.17 (with the omitting of paragraph 4.17.3.1.b &4.17.4.2.d);

• International Toy Safety Standard: ISO 8124-1:2018 Clause 4.18 (with the omitting of 4.18.3.b & the first paragraph of 4.18.4)and clause 4.19;

• US Toy Safety Standard: ASTM F963-17 section 4.21.


2. Warning requirement:

The packaging and the instructions accompanying the toy must have a warning such as “WARNING: Do not aim at eyes or face” in English, the warning must be clearly legible and visible.


“Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard 2020” :

Transition period:

1. Up to 12 June 2022, suppliers have the option to comply with the requirements from either the two standards:

• Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard 2020;

• Consumer Protection Notice No. 2 of 2009 (Consumer Product Safety Standard for Flotation Toys and Aquatic Toys).


From 13 June 2022, suppliers must only comply with the requirements in the Consumer Goods (Aquatic Toys) Safety Standard 2020.


Key requirements of the new standard:

1. Aquatic Toys have to comply with one of the following requirements:

• Australian/New Zealand Toy Safety Standard :AS/NZS 8124-1:2019 Clause 4.20 & Annex B.2.6;

• International Toy Safety Standard: ISO 8124-1:2018 Clause 4.20 & Annex B.2.6.


2. Warning formatting requirement:

The warning according to that specified in above-listed standards must be in English and shall be clearly legible, visible and indelible.
